Course Description

Proactive Protection of Rural Caregivers is an eight-hour professional development course designed to equip rural healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to prevent and mitigate workplace violence. Through a multidisciplinary, prevention-focused approach, students will learn to identify behaviors of concern, assess threats, and implement intervention strategies before incidents escalate. The course emphasizes building and sustaining a Threat Assessment Team (TAT), integrating best practices from leading threat assessment research, and aligning with regulatory requirements from OSHA, CMS, and The Joint Commission. Using real-world case studies, students will explore practical strategies for protecting caregivers, improving workplace safety, and fostering resilient healthcare environments in rural communities.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the rise of workplace violence in rural healthcare and its regulatory and legislative context.

  2. Recognize warning signs, stressors, and behaviors that indicate potential threats.

  3. Define the structure, roles, and responsibilities of a multidisciplinary Threat Assessment Team.

  4. Develop and implement comprehensive violence prevention and intervention strategies.

  5. Transition from reactive response models to proactive threat management practices.

  6. Evaluate and improve the effectiveness of threat assessment and mitigation programs.
