Transportation Systems Sector
What Does the Department of Homeland Security Say About the Sector?
Definition: The Transportation Systems Sector is one of the 16 critical infrastructure sectors designated by the U.S. government. It encompasses the vast, interconnected network of physical and cyber-based systems that quickly, safely, and securely move people and goods across the United States and abroad. This sector includes seven key subsectors—Aviation; Highway and Motor Carrier; Maritime Transportation System; Mass Transit and Passenger Rail; Pipeline Systems; Freight Rail; and Postal and Shipping—that together support basic societal functions and economic activity. A disruption to these systems would have a debilitating effect on national security, economic security, public health, and safety.
Goals:
-
Ensure the safe, secure, and efficient movement of people and goods
-
Protect transportation infrastructure from physical, cyber, and all-hazards threats
-
Sustain resilient and reliable operations across all modes of transportation
-
Advance collaboration among public and private stakeholders to manage risk and enhance sector preparedness
COLLABORATION
Promote collaboration between Transportation System Sector stakeholders in order to build strong partnerships focused on a more secure and resilient industry.
KNOWLEDGE SHARING

Transportation Critical Infrastructure Exchange
The exchange encourages stakeholders across transportation sub-sectors to share ideas and work together to elevate cultures of security, resiliency, and business continuity for the entire sector.
The Transportation Systems Sector is expansive. It includes all of the assets and supporting networks that move people and goods. These systems include industries such as aviation, rail, maritime, shipping, pipelines, physical roads, bridges, airports, waterways, warehouses, and many more assets both physical and virtual. Disruptions to these systems can impact industries, supply chains, and even the global economy. Emergency services and military operations also depend on these systems making them a priority for public safety and national security.
