Course Description
This four-hour, in-person training provides foundational instruction in hazardous materials awareness and regulatory compliance under 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart H. The course is designed for employees whose work affects the safe transportation of hazardous materials and emphasizes practical hazard recognition, regulatory responsibilities, and workplace safety. Participants will learn how to identify hazardous materials, interpret the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR §172.101), and understand key requirements related to shipping papers, placarding, packaging, and segregation. Through applied exercises, attendees will strengthen their ability to recognize hazards, take appropriate initial actions, and support safe and compliant operations.
Course Objectives
Identify hazardous materials using the nine hazard classes.
Interpret and apply the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR §172.101).
Recognize required shipping paper and placarding elements.
Apply basic principles of packaging authorization and material segregation.
Describe health risks, PPE considerations, and initial actions during a spill or release.
Understand security awareness and incident reporting responsibilities under federal regulation.
Target Audience
The audience for this course includes employees whose work directly or indirectly affects the transportation of hazardous materials, including transportation and logistics personnel, warehouse and distribution staff, utility and public works employees, construction and industrial workers, port and terminal personnel, environmental health and safety staff, and emergency management professionals. This course is appropriate for both new employees requiring initial certification and current employees needing recurrent training every three years to maintain compliance with federal hazardous materials regulations.
